Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

Audio quality: 4/10 – The audio is muffled and stuffy and not easy to hear. The male voice is quite disinterested. It sounds as though the quality has been reduced in the upload potentially in a quest to make the files smaller. This is a false economy in my view.

Audio content: 5/10 – I think the script is fine but to be honest the audio quality is so poor it’s difficult at times to understand exactly what is being said.

Ease of use: 1/10  – App was actually a written guide not an audio guide. Audio from the website was of poor quality and slow to load as we were streaming it rather than working off a download.

Worth a download? 10/30 NO. Turn off

For such a beautiful museum stacked full of masterpieces I was really disappointed that there isn’t a great, free audio guide to help you decide what to prioritize when you visit. The day we went to the museum was VERY busy which didn’t help the challenging navigation which is themed around “Masterpieces” “Artists” and “Collections” rather than physical rooms in the museum. The vast majority of the app-based guide is based on written descriptions and images and is NOT an audio guide at all.

I ended up navigating to the website and streaming the audio guides for individual images and objects as you come across them. There are 275 entries so its not that easy to find what you need as you are standing there. It’s probably more useful as a resource to explore before a visit to help you plan.

There is an audio guide for 5 Euros which can be added onto your ticket and collected in the retro way of picking up a headset for your to walk round with. In retrospect I wish I had paid for it and will do so next time.

Top Tips: Pay for the 5 Euro guide and let me know if it is any good!
